Radionica/Workshop: Face Nature: Experiments in Autumn Trees

Korijenje, osušene biljke, sjemene čahure, grančice i drugi organski materijali postaju polazište za istraživanje, crtanje i eksperimentiranje s oblicima pronađenima u prirodi. U jesenskom izdanju Face Nature posebnu pažnju posvetit ćemo drveću, njegovim strukturama, površinama i transformacijama.

O voditeljici:
Madeline Schwartzman umjetnica je, autorica i edukatorica iz New Yorka čiji rad istražuje ljudske narative, osjetilnu percepciju te odnose između ljudi i biljaka. Završila je Yale School of Architecture, a njezina interdisciplinarna praksa obuhvaća instalaciju, performans, film i video, pisanje, kustoski rad i edukaciju. Dugogodišnja je predavačica na Barnard Collegeu / Columbia University i Parsons School of Design.

Autorica je knjiga See Yourself Sensing: Redefining Human Perception (2011), posvećene budućnosti ljudskih osjetila, i See Yourself X: Human Futures Expanded (2018), koja istražuje budućnost ljudske glave i proširenja tijela. Njezina najnovija knjiga, Alive: Synthetic Cells, Feral Robots, Rebellious AI & the Design of Radical Life (Thames & Hudson, 2025), istražuje kako razvoj sintetske biologije, robotike, umjetne inteligencije, inženjerstva i umjetnosti mijenja naše razumijevanje toga što znači biti živ.

Schwartzman razvija i dugoročni umjetničko-istraživački projekt Face Nature, kroz koji istražuje lokalnu ekologiju, hibridnost te odnose između ljudskog tijela i biljnih oblika. Projekt je predstavljala kroz radionice i izložbe u Europi i SAD-u, uključujući Mediamatic u Amsterdamu, The ReInstitute u New Yorku i Berkshire Botanical Garden, kao i tijekom rezidencije Lab Verde u brazilskoj Amazoni. U Radioni realizira četiri masterclassa do sada. Trenutačno radi i na dugometražnom dokumentarnom filmu o amazonskoj prašumi koji povezuje znanost i umjetnost.

Workshop: Face Nature: Experiments in Autumn Trees

Radiona.org invites you to the workshop Face Nature: Experiments in Autumn Trees by artist Madeline Schwartzman, developed in collaboration with Deborah Hustić and Radiona, taking place on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 3 PM. This is the fourth masterclass in the Face Nature series to be held at Radiona.

The workshop begins with close observation of nature and with collecting plant forms that attract us through their structure, morphology or unusual appearance. Roots, dried plants, seed pods, branches and other organic materials become starting points for drawing, experimentation and exploration of forms found in the natural environment. In this autumn edition of Face Nature, we will pay particular attention to trees, their structures, surfaces and seasonal transformations. Before the workshop, participants are invited to take a walk through a park, the city or another green space and collect several plant specimens that they find inspiring. Look for a range of forms, textures and structures that can become source material during the workshop. Please also bring your favourite drawing tool.

What can we discover in and around Zagreb once we begin to look at nature a little more closely?

You can apply until Friday, October 9, 2026 at noon via the following link: https://forms.gle/hsxoPGPPv28mP1ry6

No prior knowledge or experience is required for the workshop – only curiosity and a willingness to experiment and explore. The workshop is free of charge and open to participants of all generations.

Madeline Schwartzman is a New York City artist, writer and educator whose work explores human narratives, the human sensorium, and human/plant interactions. A graduate of the Yale School of Architecture, her interdisciplinary practice spans installation, performance, film and video, writing, curating and education. She is a long-term faculty member at Barnard College / Columbia University and Parsons School of Design.

She is the author of See Yourself Sensing: Redefining Human Perception (2011), which explores the future of the body and the senses, and See Yourself X: Human Futures Expanded (2018), focused on the future of the human head and bodily extension. Her latest book, Alive: Synthetic Cells, Feral Robots, Rebellious AI & the Design of Radical Life (Thames & Hudson, 2025), examines how developments in synthetic biology, robotics, artificial intelligence, engineering and art are shifting our understanding of what it means to be alive.

Schwartzman is also the creator of the ongoing Face Nature project, which investigates local ecology, hybridity and relationships between the human body and plant life. The project has been presented through workshops and exhibitions internationally, including at Mediamatic in Amsterdam, The ReInstitute in New York and Berkshire Botanical Garden, as well as during a Lab Verde residency in the Brazilian Amazon. She is currently developing a feature-length documentary about the Amazon rainforest that brings together science and art.
