Face Nature je sezonska i eksperimentalna praksa u formatu radionice američke umjetnice Madeline Schwartzman kojom istražuje lokalnu ekologiju, hibridnost, ekološku krizu i budućnost ljudi.

Započnite radionicu s ovim materijalima u srijedu.

Radionica Face Nature do sada se održavala diljem svijeta, a neka mjesta gdje se održala bila su California College of Art; The Cranbrook Academy of Art; Baltan Laboratories, Eindhoven; The American School of Madrid i Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), Barcelona.

O voditeljici:
Madeline Schwartzman je arhitektica, predavačica i filmska režiserka iz New Yorka.

Madeline Schwartzman a.k.a. See Yourself Sensing masterclass Face Nature in Radiona

Face Nature masterclass under the guidance of film director, artist, writter and design lecturer Madeline Schwartzman (USA) aka See Yourself Sensing and in collaboration with the Radiona – Zagreb Makerspace community is set to take place on Wednesday , 8th September and Thursday, 9th September, 2021 from 5 to 9pm CET in Radiona – Zagreb Makerspace.

Face Nature — a seasonal, experimental practice by artist Madeline Schwartzman — explores local ecology, hybridity, the environmental crisis, and the future of humans. It brings humans in close proximity to locally foraged plants, with installations on the human body that form uncanny hybrids and present a vehicle for mutual subjectivity. The aim is to create a crack in human awareness, to serve as an antidote to passivity and inaction surrounding the future of nature, and to shift the perceived hierarchy between humans and other forms of nature.  Schwartzman presents Face Nature workshops around the world, including Mediamatic, Amsterdam, and recent engagements at the California College of Art; the Cranbrook Academy of Art; Baltan Laboratories, Eindhoven; The American School of Madrid; and the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), Barcelona. Her films and videos have screened in festivals and venues in the US and abroad.

1.1: Forage
To prepare for this two day workshop, take a walk in nature (park or city). Find some great organic matter: roots, driedplants, seed pods, extraordinary forms, interesting morphology—any plant forms that inspire you. Find different specimens to give you a range of inspiration. We’ll start the workshop with these materials on Saturday. Bring your favoride drawing tool.

What can you find in and around Zagreb or your neighbourhood no matter where you are right now? There are marvelous specimens there that you’re not used to seeing. I’m looking forward to working with you from across the world.

You can sign up via the Google form here:  https://forms.gle/LWdQvPR5wT8xhxMD9 until Monday, 6th September, 2021 at midnight. Please, keep in mind that the masterclass is lasting two days and if you plan to partake only one day, this might be unfair to the next person on the waiting list. The masterclass is free of charge

About the workshop leader:
Madeline Schwartzman is a New York City writer, filmmaker and architect whose work explores human narratives and the human sensorium through social art, book writing, curating and experimental video making. Her book See Yourself Sensing (Black Dog Publishing, London, 2011) collects the work of artists, interaction designers, architects and scientists who speculate on the future of the human sensorium through wearables, devices, head gear and installations. See Yourself X: Human Futures Expanded (Black Dog Press, London, November 2018), looks at the future of the human head, using fashion, design, and technology to explore how we might extend into space, plug our head in, or make it disappear altogether.

Schwartzman curated See Yourself E(x)ist at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery (December 2018 – February 2019), an upcoming exhibition in which eighteen artists explored the future of humans and nature. She was the curator of Objects of Wonder at the Beall Center for Art +Technology and See Yourself Sensing at San Jose State University. All three exhibitions are the result of her books, and her offshore brains: her See Yourself Sensing blog on Facebook and @seeyourselfsensing on Instagram. She is a long term Adjunct Professor at Barnard College and a senior Part time Associate Teaching Professor at Parsons: the New School for Design, where she teaches architectural design, drawing, video production and time-based media. Schwartzman has received grants and awards for her work in film, sculpture and architecture, including a residency at the American Academy in Rome. Her films and videos have screened at festivals in the United States and abroad, including at the Ann Arbor Film Festival, the Walker Art Center, and former the Morbid Anatomy Museum in New York City.

Her social art project—365 Day Subway: Poems by New Yorkers—was featured on the cover of the Greater New York section of the Wall Street Journal, on WNYC’s Brian Lehrer Show, and on PBS Weekend News Hour. Since May of 2013, every time she rides the subway, she asks a stranger to write a poem.
