Synthomir Workshop @ Device_art 5.015

Radiona.org partakes with its workshop Synthomir synthesizer within the program of Device_art 5.015 which is set to take place from 24 September to 4 October in Zagreb. Synthomir workshop takes place on 3 and 4 October at the Klović Gallery. The workshop facilitator is Igor Brkić, whilst his assistants will be Igor Petrović and Deborah Hustić. This is the very first Synthomir workshop ever so far of Radiona DIY kit which was / will be presented in international context (Dublin, Ljubljana, Bologna, Novi Sad, Zagreb) but never in the form  it was designed for – the workshop.

Synthomir is an 8-bit synthesizer based on an ATmega microcontroller and is compatible with the Arduino development environment. The Mozzi Library is used for sound synthesis. Synthomir has three ways of working: rhythm machine (with loop mode), bass and theremin modes. The basic user interface consists of just three elements (potentiometer, photo-resistor and keyboard); future upgrades and modifications of the interface are planned and enabled.

The Synthomir synthesizer was thought out as a DIY electronic kit for assembly and was part of the research that Radiona.org carried out during 2014 with the support of the Kultura Nova Foundation. Synthomir is completely open source: code, schematic and all files for the making of the electronic boards are freely available. Igor Brkić did the electronic schematic and the sound concept for Synthomir, while Damir Prizmić designed the electronic boards and proposed the visual concept. The authors have to date exhibited the synthesiser at the Sound HybridCreative Sonology exhibition in the Technical Museum in Zagreb and at the international exhibition WonderLab in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina, as well as within the program of Music Tech Fest in Ljubljana.

Radiona.org fokusira svoje aktivnosti na edukaciju, istraživačke procese, umjetničke projekte, kustoske prakse, međunarodne i domaće intersektorske suradnje, samoobnovljive sisteme i socijalno osviještena pitanja.

Radiona.org / Makerspace – Association for Development of ‘do-it-yourself’ Culture has been founded in order to enhance the visibility of makers’ open source culture and self sustainable production, as well as with an aim of  connecting all possible fields of art, science and technology. The objective here is to create new realities of networked and collaborative intermedia and new media practices in line with world trends such as DIY (do-it-yourself) and DIWO (do-it-with-others). Radiona.org focuses its activities on education, research processes, artistic projects, curatorial practices, international and domestic inter-sector collaborations, renewable systems and social awareness related issues…

Igor Brkić graduated at the Electrical Engineering and Computing Faculty in Zagreb, currently working there as an expert associate while doing research for his doctorate. He has specialised in the area of the digital processing of audio signals. He deals with embedded programming, open code, Linux, music, construction of MIDI devices and taking anything he gets his hands on to pieces. He has taken part in many exhibitions and projects and for a number of years has run successful workshops with a special focus on Arduino and the creative use of sensors in interactive installations. He has created many robotic and electronic solutions for museums, exhibitions, theatre productions in Croatia and abroad as well as for television broadcasts.
