Kroz praktični rad polaznici će upoznati povijesne fotografske postupke i cijeli proces nastanka fotografije – od pripreme staklenih ploča i fotografske emulzije do ekspozicije i razvijanja slike u tamnoj komori.

Program radionice:

2. Priprema staklenih ploča i nanošenje emulzije
Demonstracija pripreme staklenih ploča i nanošenja fotografske emulzije. Sudionici će pod vodstvom mentora imati priliku sami premazati ploče.

3. Fotografiranje velikoformatnom kamerom
Upoznavanje s tehnikama ekspozicije i praktična demonstracija fotografiranja uz korištenje unaprijed pripremljenih Zebra Dry Plates ploča.

4. Razvijanje fotografija
Razvijanje eksponiranih staklenih ploča u prijenosnoj tamnoj komori uz crveno zaštitno svjetlo. Sudionici će moći pratiti proces nastajanja fotografske slike.

5. Rasprava i završetak
Razgovor o fotografskim materijalima, kemijskim procesima, povijesnim fotografskim tehnikama i mogućnostima samostalnog eksperimentiranja.

O voditelju:
Nejc Urankar slovenski je fotograf, istraživač povijesnih fotografskih tehnika i osnivač studija Zebra Dry Plates, specijaliziranog za izradu fotografskih suhih staklenih ploča i opreme za tradicionalnu analognu fotografiju.

Njegov rad povezuje tradicionalni fotografski zanat, kemiju, dizajn i razvoj fotografske opreme, s posebnim naglaskom na srebrno-želatinske staklene ploče i velikoformatnu fotografiju. Kroz praktično eksperimentiranje, razvoj materijala i edukativni rad pridonosi očuvanju povijesnih fotografskih postupaka i njihovoj dostupnosti novim generacijama fotografa.

Dry Plate Photography with Zebra Dry Plates: From Emulsion Coating to Development – Workshop with Nejc Urankar

The BioFoto Section of the Biology Students’ Association (BIUS) invites you to the workshop “Dry Plate Photography with Zebra Dry Plates: From Emulsion Coating to Development”, led by Slovenian photographer Nejc Urankar, founder of Zebra Dry Plates. The workshop will take place on Saturday, 7 November 2026, starting at 10:00 AM at Radiona – Zagreb Makerspace (Nova cesta 186, Zagreb, Croatia). This workshop marks the first joint programme activity of BIUS and Radiona as part of their new collaboration.

How did people take photographs before digital cameras? You are probably familiar with photographic film, but what came before it, and why were dry plates such an important milestone in the history of photography?

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to coat glass plates with light-sensitive photographic emulsion, take photographs using dry plates and develop their own images. Since freshly coated plates require more than 12 hours to dry, participants will use pre-prepared plates for photography.

The workshop takes us back to the second half of the 19th century, when photography, chemistry and experimentation were closely intertwined. Through practical activities, participants will explore historical photographic processes and experience the entire process of creating a photograph – from preparing glass plates and photographic emulsion to exposure and image development in the darkroom.

Workshop Programme
1. Introduction to the History of Glass Plate Photography
A brief introduction to the history and science of dry plate photography, tracing the development from the wet collodion process to silver gelatin dry plates, alongside an exploration of historical photographic techniques.

2. Glass Plate Preparation and Emulsion Coating
A live demonstration of glass plate preparation and the application of photographic emulsion. Under the instructor’s guidance, participants will have the opportunity to coat their own glass plates.

3. Large-Format Photography
An introduction to exposure techniques, followed by a practical demonstration of photography using a large-format camera and pre-prepared Zebra Dry Plates.

4. Photographic Development
Developing exposed glass plates in a portable darkroom under red safelight conditions. Participants will be able to observe the photographic image emerging during the development process.

5. Discussion and Q&A
An open discussion about photographic materials, chemical processes, historical photographic techniques and opportunities for further independent experimentation.

About the Workshop Leader
Nejc Urankar is a Slovenian photographer, researcher of historical photographic techniques and founder of Zebra Dry Plates, a studio specialising in the production of photographic dry glass plates and equipment for traditional analogue photography.

His work combines traditional photographic craftsmanship, chemistry, design and photographic equipment development, with a particular focus on silver gelatin glass plates and large-format photography. Through hands-on experimentation, material development and educational activities, he contributes to the preservation of historical photographic processes and makes them accessible to new generations of photographers.
